Introduction

Internally designated the 997 and built between 2004 and 2012, this model represented a significant relaunch of the 911 that included a major body re-styling and interior update, while using much of the rolling chassis of the outgoing 996. This included an uprated version of the water cooled Carrera engine – now offered with 3.6-litres for the Carrera and 3.8-litres for the Carrera S.

As with all new 911s, both Carreras undoubtedly offered a better package than the previous models and the restyle in particular gave the 997 a more classic attractiveness that was arguably missing on the 996. For everyday driving, the maximum power differences are minimal, with the 3.8S offering better overtaking flexibility.

All the models have assisted steering and brakes, making them easy for all builds of driver. The factory option list has various desirable seats that offer increased adjustability, support and height.

The Cabriolet models do not have the hardtop included (as did the 996), and offer a fully electric deployment of the roof. For everyday driving few would be able to tell the difference between the rear wheel drive only Carreras and the all-wheel drive models. The C2 is perhaps slightly more agile into faster bends, and in my opinion has sharper steering, while the C4 – with the right tyres – might offer advantages on slippery surfaces.

In 997, the ‘S’ in Carrera S denotes the version with the larger and more powerful engine, whereas in the previous model, the ‘S’ designated a wider body – with a 997, the Carrera 4 or 4S have a 44mm wider rear track, and thus a wider body, than the Carrera and Carrera S.

The Carrera S and 4S had following additional features over a standard Carrera or Carrera 4:

  • Increased displacement of the engine (3.8 L vs 3.6 L) with increased power
  • Lowered suspension with PASM (Porsche Active Suspension Management)
  • 19-inch wheels
  • Upgraded braking system
  • Bi-Xenon Headlamps with wash
  • Aluminium interior trim Finishers
  • Silver Instrument Dials
