Introduction

Porsche debuted the 928 GT in the late winter 1988 for the 1989 model year after dropping the slow-selling CS and SE, power increased to 330bhp and the 928GT was only available with a 5-speed manual gearbox. The first UK RHD cars arrived in Spring 1989.

Specification included 16-inch lightweight forged alloy wheels as already seen on the 944 Turbo S (Design 90 wheels were fitted from the 1990 Model Year) and sports suspension, a diagnostic and tyre pressure monitoring system, digital trip computer and electric central locking were also introduced, the GT was like the 928 SE, having more equipment than a Club Sport model but less than a 928 S4 to keep the weight down somewhat.

It was also equipped with ZF 40% limited-slip differential as standard like the Club Sport and SE before it.

The S4 and GT variants halted production at the end of the 1991 model year, making way for the final version of the 928, the GTS.

It is believed the UK market received 225 examples of the GT in total and although there doesn’t seem to be a definitive number for the total number of GT’s produced worldwide, it looks to be between 1,600 and 2,000 Units.

Description

This particular car is believed to be the first UK, RHD 928 GT registered, even before the press car, on 21 April 1989, and was supplied new by Charles Follet Porsche at 100 Whitechapel Road, London to Mr David McCarthy.

Mr McCarthy was a good customer and prior to the 928, had been using his 944 for his daily commute from Surrey to London and back until one day the 944 suffered engine failure.

Much to Porsche’s dismay that such a failure had even occurred, they were very keen to ensure Mr McCarthy remained an advocate of the brand and discussed that a new version of the 928, the GT, was in the pipeline and as he was only interested in one with a manual gearbox, they would be very keen to do what they could both to secure a car and accommodate Mr McCarthy’s special requests – in that he would like the smaller bolstered, electric seats with memory and not the standard (and not removable) sports seats along with soft ruffled leather in his new GT, Porsche duly obliged, delivered and registered the car before the official ‘on sale’ date thus making it, as far as I know, the first UK GT and the only one without Sports Seats.

In 1990, the opportunity to purchase its perfect number plate presented itself at the DVLA auction and ‘928 GT’ was duly purchased by David and applied to the car at this time, it has remained assigned to the car ever since and remains with it now.

David kept the car for 6 years and 25,000 miles until in 1995 a Ferrari 365 BB caught his eye for sale in Scotland and the 928 was duly part exchanged for it.

That would then normally be the end of the story, but he always missed the 928, particularly as his wife maintained it was the most comfortable of all his Porsche’s and Ferrari’s to travel in.

In 1999 the then 3rd owner of the 928 somehow got hold of his phone number (probably from the service history) and called him for some additional information and any paperwork he may still have, at this point David asked that if it were ever for sale, he should let him know. That time came a year later and in 2000, now with 78,000 Miles, David once again became the owner of ‘his’ 928.

This is the point at which I became aware of the car, at the time I worked at Graypaul Ferrari in Loughborough and David was a regular customer with, I think, 4 Ferrari’s at the time, we spoke about his excitement at the return of his 928 and Graypaul arranged to collect and inspect it before ‘going home’, carrying out service and repair work before it went back to David, Graypaul continued to look after it for a number of years after that as we were happy to collect and deliver it from Surrey, between the service and repair work on his other Ferrari’s.

It remained with him until 2013 when, as we had known each other for a long time, and by that time I was Dealer Principal at Porsche Centre Silverstone, he called me to say the time had come to part with it, he was not well and wanted to make sure everything was in order should the worst happen and did I know anyone that would buy, or want the 928.

As it turned out, that someone was me, and I have continued to keep it in the manner to which it had become accustomed under David’s ownership for the last 12 years, during which time I have added around 10,000 Miles to the odometer.

David passed away in 2018 but he was always pleased to know the 928 was in safe hands and we often caught up about my time with it regularly until he died.

Sadly, the time has now come, largely due to less opportunities to use it, to part with it. In addition to the full and complete story of its life, it also has a large file full to bursting with related paperwork, invoices and MOT’s from before it was even built, with correspondence from the supplying dealer right through to the present day.

Everything works, including the Air Conditioning (albeit 1980’s Air Conditioning !), Cruise Control and Electric Memory Seats. During my ownership I have fitted the second generation Porsche PCCM system with Bluetooth, and the later 3-Spoke Steering Wheel, the original remains with the car along with its original service book, handbooks and spare keys.
