Introduction

In production between 1955 and 1962, a total of 101,476 MGA’s were built at Abingdon (although some were assembled in Australia), the vast majority of production was exported to other markets with just 5,869 cars sold in the home market.

In May 1959 the MGA received an updated engine, now at 1588 cc and producing 79.5 bhp (59 kW; 81 PS) front disc brakes were also fitted, with drums remaining at the rear. 31,501 were produced in less than three years.

Externally the 1600 is very similar to the 1500 with differences including: amber or white (depending on market) front turn indicators shared with white parking lamps, separate stop/tail and turn lamps in the rear, and 1600 badging on the boot and the cowl.

A 1600 open car was tested by The Motor in 1959. It had a top speed of 96.1 mph (154.7 km/h) and could accelerate from 0–60 mph (97 km/h) in 13.3 seconds. A fuel consumption of 29.7 miles per imperial gallon (9.5 L/100 km; 24.7 mpg‑US) was recorded. The test car cost £940 including taxes of £277.

Description

If you’re looking for an MGA that is as close to a new one as it can be, this is surely it.

Entrusted to us by a long standing customer of over 20 years, this MGA is absolutely exquisite in every way.

This UK, RHD example was originally white when delivered new, changing to Black with a Red Interior later in its life and when purchased by the most recent owner in 2000.

As with all his classics, he has an incredible eye for detail and whilst the car was very nice, it wasn’t quite as perfect as he’d like it to be, so he set about what turned into an almost 10 year restoration in his fully equipped workshop at home. An engineer by trade, and having restored and rebuilt many cars over the years, the prospect of doing the MGA didn’t faze him, but as always he entrusted major elements to trusted specialists, with the paintwork and interior carried out by specialists in their field.

The final result is absolutely breathtaking, the car really is better than it was when it was new.

Painted in Jaguar Indigo Blue, and fully retrimmed (the interior retrim alone cost £10,500, invoice in file) in Light Stone Beige Leather with Dark Blue Carpets, a Dark Blue Hood on a new frame plus a Dark Blue Tonneau Cover.

Having covered just 180 miles since completion, we are delighted to present this outstanding car for sale.
